If someone gave you the keys to the electric grid, how would you power it?

Duke Energy’s 2050 Vision: Energy Challenge simulation lets you try your hand at supplying a community with electricity while minimizing carbon dioxide emissions and keeping costs as low as possible.

The company developed the Energy Challenge to demonstrate the trade-offs utilities are obligated to consider as they build power generation that will meet customer demand in the coming decades.

To make the simulation as realistic as possible, Duke Energy paired data from its own service areas and power plants with information supplied by independent sources, including the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and various energy trade associations.

Build a solar farm? Shutter a natural gas-fired power plant? Retrofit a coal-fired one?

It’s up to you. What will you decide?
