It all started back in 1899 when Florida Power began supplying St. Petersburg, Fla., with 30 incandescent lights – but only from sunset until midnight.
The utility that began as Florida Power Corp. now covers 13,000 square miles of central and north Florida and serves 1.7 million customers.
Florida Power Corp. served the state from 1899 until 2000, when it merged with Carolina Power & Light to form Progress Energy. That company merged with Duke Energy in 2012.
