When Carolina Power & Light (CP&L) was chartered in 1908, the company had 983 customers in the Raleigh, N.C., area and provided service for trolleys, home lighting and a limited amount of street lighting. Today, the service area covers about 32,000 square miles and supplies electricity to 1.5 million residential, commercial and industrial customers.
CP&L served customers until 2000, when it merged with Florida Progress Corp. to form Progress Energy. That company merged with Duke Energy in 2012.
