Volunteers in Florida clear algae from spring

More than 100 Duke Energy volunteers gathered at Hunter Springs Park in Citrus County, Fla., last year to scoop out harmful algae from the bottom of Kings Bay as part of the “One Rake at a Time” community initiative. The algae, called Lyngbya (pronounced "ling-bee-ya"), smothers native vegetation, blanketing the springs' sandy bottom and damaging the ecosystem and aquatic wildlife.

Removing the slimy muck was a messy job. This activity, just one of hundreds of community projects Duke Energy employees completed last year, gets the nod for one of the most inventive – and soggiest – undertakings.
