Citrus County's Shirley Warren is honored with children's reading area at community center

It’s no shock that Shirley B. Warren won a Positive Energy Surprise from Duke Energy Foundation – in the past 20 years, she fostered more than 200 children in the Crystal River, Fla., area. At the newly constructed George Washington Carver Community Center, she’ll continue to influence the lives of others through Shirley B.’s Book Nook.

The Center was built where Crystal River’s first African-American, one-room schoolhouse once stood. Shirley was a student and later worked at the school, which will now house her namesake nook complete with a rocking chair and collection of children’s books.

Watch the short video below to hear more from Shirley and Duke Energy Government and Community Relations Manager Dorothy Pernu on the positive effect this community center will have in Citrus County.
